Does
My Web Site Work?
Stories and Real Advice for and from Web Site Owners
For over a decade, my wife, Jennifer and I have been building
web site for businesses small and large. One of the biggest
challenges faced by businesses we work with is lack of knowledge
about what a web site can and should do for the business.
There is an ever increasing number of web developers out
there that can build some kind of web site. The challenge
comes when people do not know how to check their own sites
to see that it is well designed. Also, there is a need to
know what kind of things are out there to improve the performance
of a web site.
The Internet has many gompanies that know how to build a
good site and create highly effective tools, however, there
is a sharp increase of people that know the basics and pass
themselves off as professionals.
I was recently reminded of the biggest reasons I entered
this business to start with. Years ago, I read an article
about a company that highered someone to register a domain.
Today it is worth $10-$35, but then it was $110. The company
paid nearly $100,000 for this person to perform a $110 purchase
that took about 5 minutes.
Stories like this are still happenning. Frankly, it makes
me sick. I have been a programmer since the early 80s and
'played' on the web since '94. The information provided here
is to help you understand in layman terms that a web site
may not be as expensive or complex as someone told you.
The purpose of this site is not to attract customers to our
company. It is designed to educate business owners (whether
they are our clients or not) as to how to tell if their business
site is doing as good as it could.
Please, look around the site, read all you want and feel
free to interject your own experiences or questions at any
time. We may not respond to every question, but someone may.
If you are a web developer and have information regarding
questions and other postings here, feel free to add to the
site. If you log in, you can add a link to your own companies
web site under the Web Developers category along with other
information about yourself and your services. Beware, if you
are here to scam people into your services, dissatisfied clients
can post their own experiences with you, too. What that means,
if you choose to post, know your stuff.
We may not be able to educate our puppy George, pictured
above, but we have felt as stupid as him when faced with the
unknown. It is my hope that this site can take a little bit
of George out of all of us when it comes to building and managing
web sites. Enjoy.
