Message: One of many my biggest annoyances come from other web developers/masters/hosts (there is a difference) who practice to deceive. More on this in a moment

I see a lot of web sites that use frames on their web sites. Frames are a method of breaking up the page into two sections. Frequently one section will be for navigation and the other larger section will have the content of the pages.

The most obvious sign of the use of frames is that one area can scroll up and down separate from the other area. If you are fortunate enough to have a little roller on your mouse, you can click in a blank area of your site and roll it up and down. Does the section scroll separately from the rest of your web page. You MAY have frames on your site.

FRAMES ARE NOT ALWAYS BAD, BUT THEY SHOULD BE AVOIDED WHEN POSSIBLE

A good web promoter will be able to get around the challenges associated with the use of frames, but if it can be done without frames, it should. This is just to make sure there are fewer things to break in promoting your site.

We have some pages on some of our own sites that use frames because we cannot get around it. This may happen. But if it can be done without, try to.

NOW FOR THE DECEPTION

We have found a few unscrupulous web people who deceive you into thinking your site does not use frames when it really does. How can you tell?

First, to do these next steps, you must be able to see the ADDRESS box on your browser. That is the box that when you go to Google the address box will say http://www.google.com.

As you are browsing through your site, you should see the address changing from page to page. It will always start with your web address, but the letters after your web address will change:

http://www.yourname.com/part_that_changes.html

or

http://www.yourname.com/page_name.php?part_that_changes

This is the first good sign that things are working right.

The ultimate test is to view the source of the page. Now, a lot of what you are about to see may be confusing to the novice or amateur browser, just look for the illustrations below.

-------------------------------------
To be sure you are viewing the right source code, don't use the right click feature... this can be deceiving.
-------------------------------------

On your browser window (Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox, Opera, etc) in the menu (where it says File Edit View...) click on the View menu. In there you will see something about "View Source" or "Source". Click that.

A window will pop up with a lot of HTML programming. DON'T PANIC...

You are looking for anything that looks like the following:

<frameset
<frame
<noframes>
</noframes>
</frameset>

If you see a lot of these items in there, your site uses frames.

If your web person has told you they do not use frames, they are lying to you and you should find someone else. If you have always wondered why you cannot get on Google or Yahoo, you have just found one of the biggest reasons.
