Message: Making changes to your site can be done in one of dozens, if not hundreds of ways. The first thing you must ask your web developer/host is, "IF you can make changes to your site?"
Some web companies will allow you full control over the content of your site. Full control is great if you know the ins and outs of how site navigation, content and other features effect the placement of your site on the search engines. This can be tricky, but in no way impossible. With a bit of study on the web, anyone can have access to the same information used by the best web master. One site I have found quite useful is this on-line HTML Tutor. If you wish to learn HTML and how to manage a site yourself, this is THE place to start.
Some web companies will give you limited control in an effort to keep you site high on the search engines but still allow you to keep your site current.
This is one of the primary focus of our company systems. Only you, your site owner can know what is the current information for your site. Making these changes every week or two is a good way to keep your site active. Paying a web company to do that for you can get expensive, for a company on a budget, look for ways to make such changes on your own. Check with your web developer to see if they have cost concsious systems to make this happen. The losng term savings will FAR out-weigh a setup fee of under $100.
Just make sure that the knowldege level fits your abilities. This means that if you don't know or care to know HTML, make sure you can just type in what you want entered easily.
Microsoft Frontpage, Macromedia (now Adobe) Dreamweaver and many other HTML editors are available, too. Be sure you are knowledgeable enough to use them. For instance, just openning an existing page in Microsoft Frontpage will cause Frontpage to re-write a significant amount of your page without your knowledge if you do not know what to look for. If the page was designed in Frontpage, you may be okay, but it is not a personal favorite.
Dreamweaver is very nice about this, but in my own experience, it still requires a good working knowledge of HTML.
The biggest consideration you must make is does your knowledge allow you to use these programs. Can you keep your site on top of the search engines. If you can or are willing to learn, I truly encourage you to try. Knowledge is power and that is the whole goal of this site. Take some time and try the free on-line lessons offerred by Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction.
Best wishes
