A reciprocal linking policy is not always that fruitful. You would likely be better to add another few pages to your website and link them to your home page. That would at least increase the overall rank available in your site, and allow you to distribute it as you please.

The best links are one-way to your web page, without you having to provide one back. The best way to get that is by submitting your website to web directories, from which your home page will be provided with one-way links, and by writing articles and submitting them to article directories. In the latter case, you get one way links back to the page of your choice, not necessarily your home page.

Linking strategies can be worked out mathematically, and it is possible in theory to maximize your internal page rank for any specific web page. You can then direct visitors to that page, and achieve one-way links to it from article directories, by judicious use of your author’s resource box. What nobody knows, however, is how many links from how many high ranked web pages, are necessary to change from one page rank to another.

The best advice is to get as many links as possible. In theory, every link from a page with some rank, even if only 1, should give you something. Also, no page can give you a negative ranking. However, a reciprocal link could lose you ranking. If your page with a PR of 4 is reciprocally linked to a page with a PR of 5, but with a hundred other links on it, then you will possibly lose out!

If you want to improve your Google page rank, be careful who you link with, and try to get as many one-way links as possible. Reciprocal links should form only a part of the total number of links to your web page. Make your page as authoritative as possible, and you will get other pages voluntarily linking to yours.
